This may sound like a stupid question but I'm not a technical user (at all) so please forgive me. As far as I can tell we have a Meridian M8X24. We have 8 lines and around 20 extensions.

What I'm trying to do is port line 8 to a specific extension so that I can plug an answerphone into the extension (we don't have voicemail). We have a standard answerphone but when plugged into the extension it won't pick up the call. I have set the prime extension of the line and the extension can access the line. I don't know if I need a particular kind of answerphone or if the relevant settings can be made through the system. I have access to the configuration through an M7310 phone but have no programmer access to the CCU.

Can anyone give me any pointers?

unless you are hooking this up to an ata (analog terminal adapter) the answering machine will not work because it needs to be on an analog port for this to work J Cadina IV

hwngambler is correct about your needing an ATA and then when you have an ata set up the ata port to have line 8 only appear and ring it, you do not need the primeSet since that may cause delay in ringing to the ATA. if you want to have the ATA make calls out on that extension you will need to assign that extension to its own line pool with a line pool access code, the ata dosen't get to use the prime line feature on the system. Cheers Guys. I'm not sure if we do, but assuming we have an ATA, how would I set up line 8 as you mention above through my M7310?

OK the ATA will be connected to a port and that port will have a DN assigned to it. You will need the DN, easiest way is to put a plain phone on it and call another set. the display will tell you what the DN is that is making the call.
go to Terminals&Sets->DN->Line access->line assignment->(remove all apperances except line 8 which you want to appear and ring)
next Lines->008->Trunk/Line data->trunk type:pool a/b/c
next Terminals&Sets->DN->line access->line Pool a/b/c:Yes
(Note a/b/c above is just an indication for whichever pool letter you choose to use ie.B)
Next System Programming->Access Code->line pool a/b/c: (use code available, system will not let you assign unavailable codes.)
that should do it, test it out with a Plain telephone to see if you have ring coming in and can dial out with the access code. JerryReeve

What jerry told you is right . the second part however should only be done if you are curently using line pools . No need to set up a line pool for just that if your not using them already . Besides I thought this was going to a answering machine ? If thats the case all you have to do is assign the line as Jerry explained above
If you find a tip helpful Please take a moment to mark it as such.

I've tried the suggested. We do have line pools set up so I've followed all of the instructions but it still doesn't work. Browsing through the options, there is an ATA Settings command under Configuration > Capabilities > Extn abilities. The settings are as follows:

ATA use:On Site (other option is Off Site)
ATA mode:Tone (other option is Pulse)
ATA tones:N (other option is Y)

Is it likely these need to be different? If it doesn't work after this, I think I'll give up as a bad job. Thanks for your help so far.

Those settings are going to be there even if you dont have an ATA. If you want only line 8 to be picked up by an answering machine then install a jack on line 8 before the dial tone ever enters the meridian. Then just program the machine to pick up after X number of rings.

If you do not want to go to the cost of an ATA, you could TEE line 8 from your connection box to a master line jack unit & plug the answering machine into this socket.
By manually switching the answering machine off & on, it will pick up any calls on that line.
This is a quick & easy way out of your problem.
