Customer is telling me that at times their callers hear a squeel sound when calls ring in. The line is answered on first ring customer sees the line answered and the lamp goes red. These lines have a verified AA delay of 4 rings.

This does not happen all the time. Theya re also hearing cross talk bleeing from some of the lines.

COuld this be the 308 or the old Partner Mail ( old metal box on the wall v 3.0 ) causing the problem.

I have called in my self and have heard this strange squeel. It is not a fax machine but sounds more like data.

This is not the carrier because they just switched from Embarq to Cox and are still having the same problems.

Going over today to change the PROC and the 308 to see if it goes away.

Never had this problem before. Any suggestion?

Thanks!

Look for burg/fire alarm system that may be answering line - we've had this several times in the past.

The squeal could be from the caller Id coming in. Try waiting untill after the 2nd ring to answer.

I agree with Mike. The problem being reported is that the person calling in (not the customer) is hearing the squeal. The calling party won't hear Caller ID tones being passed to the called party.

I think you could have more than one issue.

I agree that the "data" sound is probably an alarm modem trying to answer...but that doesn't cover the cross talk. I would check to see which line the alarm is on..if there is one and test accordingly. If you found a modem answering then you have fixed the squeel. I would then hold off on replacing the equipment...but if I didn't find a modem...

The loop current could have been really high with the old service provider and may have weakened/overheated the components in the 308 causing a squeel and the cross talk. I would test the loop current now with the new service provider.

No modem found above, no high loop current now equals replace equipment or at least the 308.

Modem found above, advise customer. And tell them to let you know if they continue to have cross talk. Test loop current as a reference. If cross talk is reported later then replace equipment. lg

Thanks. I had no idea that an alarm systme would want to answer. I will check to see which line it is connected to. It could explain the line seasure. I will report back.

The line is answered on first ring customer sees the line answered and the lamp goes red.

Here is your indication that something on the phone system is doing the answering.

It could be an alarm - I've had less than stellar alarm installers grab the first thing that had "dial tone" - the voice pair from a Partner station - and do their in's and out's there. If the alarm is programmed for remote access, a single ring, followed by no ring for around 20 to 30 seconds, and then another ring will cause it to answer with a modem tone. That can easily happen if a call is received, answered on the 1st ring by another extension, and a few seconds later another call is received.

It could also be a FAX machine, or a PC modem, or even the modem in the Remote Access PC Card, if programmed incorrectly.

I would program "auto-intercom" buttons on a phone, and watch to see which extension goes off hook when a call comes in.

It was the alarm. Like you siad they just grabbed the first thing with dial tone, very poor installation. They used one of the 6 button set and actually spliced into the pair right at the jack.

I told the customer and they called the alarm company and told them they had to connect it to the block.

This is why I use the same alarm company and same installer for my clients. He knows what I want. This client used a friend of a relative to get a cheaper install.

They also installed on of these new all in one alarm panel and control units. Rip them off the wall and the whole system is dead.

One client had a plasma screen stolen because the alarm was destroyed with in 30 seconds of break in before it could dial out. I suggest only useing alarms with hidden locked metal box control units not these new all in ones.
