I have a RAS server that currently has a dedicated PRI. This server is actually used for outbound polling to my POS systems at night. Because this normally runs after hours, I would like to move the box behind my PBX (Succession 3.0) to save the cost of a dedicated PRI. Several years ago I managed an option 81C and I had some Line Side T1's into RAS servers and Fax servers. Is this the only way I can have RAS behind my PBX? It can support either PRI or channelized T1 and is using a Patton (formerly Digi) T1/PRI card.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Chris

I would go with PRI for the best integration. Check with the vendor on what PRI protocols they support. For the best integration use Q.Sig signalling. This is a peer-to-peer protocol. If you run one of the DMS or NI-2 protocols, these are designed for CPE to Carrier connections, and they may run you into a corner as far as programming flexibility. You certainly can run them, but the cleanest is via a protocol designed for peer-to-peer.

We are trying to do a similar thing with a Patton RAS server model 2960 and a Nortel 81C PBX. The 2960 supports NI1 but the 81C supports NI2. I have tried a number of combinations using NI2 on the 81C with a PRI but have not been able to even get the D-channel to come up when the PRI is connected to the RAS server. If you find a solution, please post it.
