This is a student question. My text book tells me that the first part of the inteface information is Layer 1 information and the second part is Layer 2 eg "FastEthernet3 is up, line protocol is up". Please see below. I have a cable plugged into F3 but not F2. F2 is switchported to vlan2. Does my text book have things back to front? I would have thought that if F2 is unplugged the first part of the message should say 'down' (layer 1)? I have a Cisco 871 router, IOS version 12.3. I am starting to wonder if an 871 router is a good router to learn on? I do have a 2800 series that I could learn on instead?

FastEthernet2 is up, line protocol is down

FastEthernet3 is up, line protocol is up
Internet protocol processing disabled

Both of those ports have something plugged into them. Your understanding is correct. And yes, FastEthernet2 has an L2 connectivity problem.
