Line Feed and Carriage return characters in a memo field

I am trying to ascertain the characters sent from a VB app to format a memo field with a new line. I have tried various combination of $0D and $0A and Chr(10) and Chr(13) but these are not recognized. Clearly it can be done, but I have no way to trap the characters. Any help would be appreciated.
