Limiting field selection on the AS/400

I am using an emulator to access DB/2 files. I also use the SQL utility. I cannot use the standard SQL statement to return selected fields from a file. Example

select fldchar1,fldchar2 from library/filename

instead I have to use:

select * from library/filename.

How would one filter a select statement for select fields?
