Hi all,
I know this is an old OS, but my department is relying on OS9 for another year, until we can dump it.

I'm setting up a server running Filewave 4.x, and it's going to have 260 clients connecting via IP or appleshare. My co-worker is telling me that OS9 only supports 10 users (whether tcp/ip or appleshare, he didn't say). Is this true? I can't roll out this server unless I can come up with a way for 260 clients to connect unobstructed. I'm running OS 9.2.2 (not server, if there is such a thing) on a G4. Thanks.

As far as I know Filewave is server management software. If you are attempting to connect more than 10 people simultaneously to a standard mac using its file sharing or webserver built ins, you should be limited to 10 people - in either OS9 or OSX.

Apple makes 2 Server products also. The first is also limited to 10 connections and costs $500. The second is for unlimited connections and costs $1000. There is no version that has a per seat licensing fee.

Depending on what model G4 you have, OSX server might not work very well due to speed bumps. Also OSX server supports OS8 and OS9 machines with Appleshare client 3.7 or later.

Interestingly, Apple servers start at $3000 and all include the unlimitied version of OSX server. The bottom defiinitely needs additional drive space above the minimum and you would probably also want to spring for another $100 for the optional video card.

Using OSX 10.3.8 on a G4
