Limit items listed in a WebPart

Is there a way to limit the amount of items listed in a WebPart. I have tried to modify the depth under appearance, but that did not work.

There is a great function to Limit Items in the Document Library list, but this does not apply to the WebPart on the site's home page.

You have the same option for the webpart on the home page go to its properties ans pers the first link you see! Edit view something. in the next window look for the last item. There you can set the option to limit the items or show them in batches of a number of items...
