Limit Email Size Based on Number of Recipients 1

I am having problems with users sending moderately sized attachments to many recipients.

An example is a user sending an email to 50 people outside our company with a 2 MB attachment.

This is causing excessive network utilization which is impacting network performance for 10-15 minutes.

I can limit send file size or maximum number or recipients but not one based on the other.

It is not a problem to send a tiny 10K file to 50 people or a 2 MB email to a couple of people - just the combination of the two.

What I really would want to do is multiply the number of recipients by the size of the email and deny the send based on that number.

Is there a way to do this in Exchange 2003?

Thanks.

Nope... You have to set one or the other. Restrict attachment size or number of recipients.

In general you should only see impact to your internet connection when this occurs. If you have multiple locations and exchange servers distributed among those locations, then you may need to set up an organizational SMTP connector to ensure that the mail goes to a central location first before going out.

Now that I think about it, you could set up an SMTP connector, then only allow emails exceeding a certain size to be transmitted after business hours.

That sounds interesting.

I already have a SMTP connector functioning.

Are you talking about modifying the Delivery Options/Specify when messages are sent through this connection/Use different delivery times for oversize messages option?

That certainly seems worth a try.

Thanks!

That's exactly the one.
