Short of a compromise, what on earth can make the bootloader suddenly disappear? I doubt it is a compromise, but I guess it is possible.

Are you dual booting? Have you added/removed any hardware? Is the bios set to boot off the correct device? The way to fix is to boot from any linux cd into rescue mode, mount your linux partition. Then chroot to the mounted partition and run lilo again. This should reinstall lilo.

My apologies, I knew I forgot something. This is a dedicated Debian box located in the Savvis datacenter. No dual boot, no hardware changes (at least that the dc hasn't told us about). They have swapped our primary hd with a secondary hd and are reimaging the hd for us. I am just looking for a starting point when I start looking at the secondary hd.
