Lilo error? But I'm using GRUB

I just recompiled my kernel and installed it using a perl script I found on called IK (which I've used several times before). This time when I reboot instead of getting a grub menu (which I should since grub is my bootloader) I get a lilo error "LI" and can go nowhere else. I assume the perl script installed the kernel boot information in LILO and didn't run /sbin/lilo, but does that even make sense since it's never done that before? Use a boot disk to boot your system all the way up.

Type lilo at the command prompt. That will fix the lilo loader problem.

Well, problem resolved automagically. I powered the box down for a day (since I didn't have time to mess with it), and when I powered it up to work the problem it booted right into grub. I checked /etc/lilo.conf but it doesn't exist. I renamed my /sbin/lilo so that it could not be accidently run. I have no idea why this happened and am open to suggestions. There is nothing in the log files because this happened before any drives were mounted. Meekness: Uncommon patience in planning a revenge that is worth while.
