I was curious if anyone has any experience with this ATM switch and if so how highly recommended it would come for certification studies. I am going to put one together regardless. I just got the processor board off of eBay for $20 with a 90 day warranty. Had to grab it.. generally runs around $150 to $200 for the board. That said I found a guy offering the chassis' (has 5) for $100 after shipping (Not bad for an 80lb item). Would still need power supplies (found some in the UK pretty cheap but waiting on an email back stating whether or not they are for U.S.A... probably not in which case I will just buy one). Then I get to research modules.

Looks like it would be a nice addition to the lab as it can go from my backbone workgroup switch to my campus backbone and has a ton of features.

Just wanted to know what you guys think.. Looks like I will be spending around $300 by the time I am done here.. Only $20 in right now so it's pretty simple to back out now. I read some articles a while back where some guys said they used these switches for CCIE studies as they have a lot of QoS and other features.. but not so sure how recent that was. I know that Cisco has EoL'd this switch in 2005 and software support etc. ends in 2011. Thanks guys!

I would really appreciate any advice on the LS1010 as I am between this and another model and not sure wgich way to go. Just curious as to whether or not you see this being useful for certification purposes on down the line? A reasonable investment? How about ATM in general... I know that the focus is on MPLS now but I don't see ATM going away anytime soon, right? This switch maxes at IOS 12.1x ... Just looking for any advice on this one.

Just from my experience, I wouldn't waste time on ATM. Never used, never seen it, so haven't bothered with it.

Don't waste your time or money. It's a little like buying Token Ring or BanyonVines. ATM is falling out of favor. It's not in any of the major certification tracks (not even CCIE R&S) and it is a technology that is only still used in ISPs because they spent so much money on the gear and don't want to get rid of it. MPLS is the focus and Cisco is betting on carrying Ethernet frames everywhere regardless of the underlying Layer 1 or Layer 2 technology.

Thanks guys.. I got the same response from the CCIE forum at the Learning Network.. Looked at the blueprint myself.. Looks like the switch would perform all of the security functions.. Radius, EAP (some), TACACS+.. The major issue I think would be the fact that it can't go beyond 12.1! Would probably be better to invest in a 3550 with a tad more money!
