Hi,

I'm working within a tiny IT department (5 supporting 500+ on hardware & software). As such we have no real lifecycle to guide along the way.

are there any good sites or examples to look at.
is any method better than another ?

help and pointers welcome.

I think "lifecycle" will depend on whether you are talking about network installation, general troubleshooting & repair, programming...

For me, I'm the sole programmer, web developer/administrator, dba, etc... around a bunch of network guys in my department. Granted, there are hundreds of other programmers and dba's in my company, but I never talk to them.

What I do for my projects, is someone comes up with an idea. I think about it, and say, "one week" or however long I think. I am told to do it. We establish a timeline. I plan it, develop it, and test it, it gets reviewed (multiple times) and then implemented, and closed.

Between jobs, if I get bored, I try to come up with an idea, or I just surf the net ;)

It was mainly the programming/development area. Thats pretty much how it works here. The question was sort of is there a better way of time management than that described above. I find it can be frustrating having ad-hoc plans all the time.

Cheers.

Personally I'd raise your question in the project management forum, you're likely to get a much better response in there. SOL
Yeah people they won't understand,
Girlfriends they don't understand,
In spaceships they don't even understand,
and me I aint ever gonna understand
