We are currently looking at upgrading our domain to a Windows 2003 shop, and currently run all NT 4.0 servers. Due to the number of servers and applications involved this process will take some time.

Another component that is going to be added to the mix is the fact we will endup with 3 W2K servers, and some additional remote VPN users.

Our environment is using PerSeat licensing for the CALs, and we have enough for the existing NT 4.0 server base.

My question is if I buy Windows 2003 CALs to cover the existing clients and new remote users will this cover PerSeat requirements for all the various server types (ie. NT 4.0 / W2k / Windows 2003)?

Thanks for the help!

Microsoft CALs bought under a MOLP or Select agreement have downgrade rights so this would be fine. OEM licences (those bought with the hardware) generally don't have downgrade or transfer rights. You should still double-check with your software reseller though, all the major ones will have MS licensing specialists (we use Software Spectrum ourselves).
