I have a friend who is a Network Admin (in charge of the Windows servers). When they install new 2003 boxes, they use the same CD, but they have an open license from Microsoft, so they can use the same code. For some reason, when they want to upgrade the amount of licenses (I think), they end up with new retail boxes of Server 2003 R2 Standard. They're just collecting dust, and he gave me one of the boxes since I wanted to install one on a new home network I'm putting together.

My question is, are these new copies of Server 2003 somehow registered in his companies name? I think they get their product from CDW if recall our conversation correctly. I don't want to register this copy if it's somehow registered in their name. Thanks for reading my question.

More than likely the boxes are shipping with an OEM version that is tied to specific hardware.

By the sound of it your friends company is paying for volume licensing. As long as they have given you the media and the certificate of authenticity with the unique CD Key (not their volume licensing key) then yes, you should be able to register the product in your name.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
