Hi everyone. We are installing a windows server, or should I say many windows servers and have purchased the hardware with a server license. We are using the Windows Server download from MSDN to get the images up and running properly. If I remember correclty, there was a tool that would convert the msdn licence to the key that came with the server. If I am correct, what is that tool? If I am not correct, are we safe licensing-wise leaving the msdn license on the box as long as the key sticker is on the server itself? thanks!

Steve

As far as I am aware, you are breaking the licensing.

OEM licenses cannot be imaged, if that is what you purchased then you need to be installing that version manually and configuring that way.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Doesn't the MSDN distro install the appropriate windows version according to the key you supply? You should ideally be entering the key during the install process.

ya I am going by what a counterpart told me. It looks like for some reason, the only valid key we have is for embedded server 2k3 and they were trying to enter that into a normal 2k3 server installation. I am trying to verify but that doesn't seem to me that it would work.

MSDN cannot be used in a production environment.

You would need to download from the VL site rather than MSDN.
