When purchasing licenses for Exchange 2007 (or indeed 2010), do we need to get the number of licences that we are going to have mailboxes, or can we just use the number of licences for the number of users who will be concurrently connecting to the exchange server?

We currently have Exchange 2003, and as far as i can tell it appears to allow us to have more mailboxes than the licensed users that we have so fits in with my concurrent theory - are the newer versions of Exchange the same?

Regards
James Wilson

You buy a user CAL for each mailbox. If you're going use some of the bonus features, you also need to buy the ADD-ON Enterprise CAL for those users.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

Thank you for clearing that up for me!
