I'm trying to get my head around the options for licensing. We are currently in a workgroup environment with about 100 users. We will shortly be going to AD.

In a workgroup environment am I right in understanding that we need Per User CAL's on server for each user who may touch the server in any way. So say we have 3 2003 servers and all users may require access at some point, do we need 100 CALs for each totalling 300 CALs?

When AD comes along I have been told that if the servers are part of the domain you only need 100 CALs on the AD server and then users can access any other shares on the member servers using this CAL's. So in principle do we only need 100 CALs once AD is in place?

I've checked out the MS website and have read the info but can't quite clear this up. Apologies if I'm being daft!

You best bet to determine what you need would be to call MS or a dealer like CDW and get exactly what you need. Servers can be set up as a per seat or per server for licensing and each requires different licenses.

Thanks for the reply. What I'm really after though is just a quick answer as to whether or not you purchase cals for every server in a domain or just once for the domain access?

So for an ad domain with 1 DC and 2 member servers, all of which will be access by any of the 100 users will you buy 100 cals in total or 100 cals for each server at a total of 300 cals?

If you are purchasing user CAL's, then you will only need to purchase 100 not 300.

OK Thanks! I thought that was the way it worked but wanted to confirm.
