The basic concepts are:
1. Other people have intellectual property they'd like to protect via copyright.
2. You have intellectual property you'd like to protect via copyright.
3. Do things to ensure that your interests and their interests do not intersect. You'll still get letters claiming that you are infringing their rights, at which point you need to get your lawyer to look at their letter & formulate a reply.
This is a vast simplification, of course. There's a lot of research that you need to do to understand it as fully as you need to. Start with Google and the business law section of your library/bookstore.
