Hi

when I check a server it tells me 15 licenses are installed but the line underneath says the maximum number of usable licenses is 10

can some nice person explain??

thanks

Ian

It doesn't say maximum usable, it says maximum USAGE, which is basically how many the server considers you to have used up so far.

SBS won't block your connections until you exceed your installed licenses +5, so when you have 20 users connected, your 21st will be blocked....

I don't think that's entirely accurate - I think there's a grace period and THEN it starts blocking anyone over the licensed number - I had a client that definitely didn't go +5 over and after a week... maybe two, they ended up having clients over the licensed number blocked from accessing the server or even logging on.

Interesting. I've gotten all sorts of responses from "experts" about this. Some said there was no connection blocking at all, which is false. But others have affirmed that there are five "hidden" licenses that provide some grace in situations like workstations being retired and so forth.

I'll be finding out in the next week or so: I have a client with 89 active users in the AD and their "Maximum Usage" is at 74 right now. I've been pressing them weekly to move forward with the Transition Pack for months (they actually purchased 90 SBS CALs!), but they haven't pulled the trigger. Part of me is hoping that the pain hits as soon as they get to 75 in use, but I'm expecting that the pain won't set in till they reach 80.

I've had clients reach their limit before, but I just don't remember how exactly it worked out, and whether the "max used" actually displayed anything higher than their real license count. It could be that the "grace period" you are speaking of may just be the amount of time it took for five more licenses to get burned up, but it sounds like in your experience it didn't work that way...
