Before I reinstall XP Pro, do I need to go online and deactivate the key?

Once I reinstall I am going to need windows updates, and I don't want it to tell me this is a 2nd instance or anything like that.

How does this work?

As long as its the same computer, you should be o.k.

----------------------------------
Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

if you have any trouble, you'll get an 800 # to call and they'll manually activate for you... as long as u own the copy of xp your A-OK

but if its the same computer with no changes to the hardware, its very likley that u wont have any issues at all.

Thanks, I figured as much. Since I happen to be experiencing a slow crash :) I thought as a matter of preparation(to go ahead and deactivate(online) the key now....but it seems it is just best to call if I have a problem on activation.

BTW - I was just reading that only a m-board or case!! change would cause the oem license to become invalid

Just copy the activation key (and backup) then copy them back again after the re-install.

As the 'wpa.dbl' activation key (and backup) is generated from 10 different bits of hardware (which includes the mainboard but doesn't include the case) they can only be used on the same PC. So, if you are just re-installing XP then this is probably the easiest way to do it.

Have a look at for more information and step-by-step instructions.

Hope this information helps...
