I just upgraded from FM Pro v.5 to v. 8. When I try to open v.5 file, it obviously wants to convert it and does so. However because the original file was password protected, the converted file wants the password as well. The only problem is, the same password does not work and I cannot open the file. (Am using the same username too).

Appreciate any feedback as to where the problem might lie.

libman54,

As you have discovered the upgrade process doesn't use the existing password. I believe that the password in v8 is the group name in v6. I haven't done an upgrade in a long time so I could be wrong.

Take a look at the documentation that comes in the English Extras folder. You may find your answer there. Also, there are some white papers on Filemaker's website that cover the upgrade process. I'm certain that you will find the answer there.

So there probably isn't any problem, it's just using the group name (I think) as the password.

What I do if I have to convert a file.

When there are no links between password and accessprivileges, remove the password from the old file, disable the opstartscript (if any)and open in FM7/8 and rebuild the accessprivileges there.
