I have a Lexmark x5470 printer that will not recognize the black ink cartridge. It says that the black cartridge is missing even when it is there. I have put in all new Black and color cartridges and still have the same problem. It there a way to repair this? Is the ribbon cable that control the print cartridges bad or broken?

Unless there's something in the manual equivalent to "initialize new cartridge" or "confirm new cartridge" OR you've put in two bad cartridges in a row, I'd say you have a physical printer problem.

I would try a GENUINE (not refilled) cartridge just to be sure it's not the cartridge. Be careful that the cartridge is not worth more than the printer though.

I'd also unplug the printer for a few minutes (with the new cartridges having already been installed) and see if it will get itself together after a thorough power down.

Are you using Lexmark brand cartridges (which is what goombawaho was getting at)?

If you are, also double-check to make sure the cartridges haven't expired (the date should be stamped on the box and on the cartridge). Some printers might not respond to expired ones. If that checks out too, then I'd say it's time to buy a new printer. It's not worth the time or money to repair inkjet printers. With a new printer, you will get starter ink cartridges, so keep that in mind if you're concerned about the price.

I agree with cdogg for the most part.

It's also possible that the contacts between the printer and the cartridge are dirty or not making good contact. You can try wiping down the contacts on the printer to remove dust, grime, ink, etc and re-eating the cartridge to see if that works. In the past, I've used isopropyl alcohol doing this...

If a simple fix like this doesn't work, as cdogg stated, you may be able to get a cheap new inkjet printer.

Who gave me the star - the OP hasn't been back to make a comment??? Thanks though. I was wanting to hear what the final conclusion was.
