Hello!
I recently started a new job as the Project Manager for a group of 8 programmers. I am new to MS Project but not new to Project Management.
This group of programmers is currently assigned to spend a certain portion of each day working on "help desks" and the remaining portion of of each day working on "projects". Each person has a different allocation to help desks and projects. I would like to show both help desk time and project assignments in MS Project but am having problems with resource leveling splitting the project tasks.
The following is what I have tried in order to schedule Jane, a resouce who works 3 hrs on help desks and 5 hrs on projects each day. I have set up a resource pool where Jane is using the standard calendar (8 hrs/day). I created a help desk task that starts now and goes to the end of the year. This task uses a "3 hr calendar" (which is set up as 8AM-11AM each workday) and has Jane assigned as a resource on this task at 100%. Then I created a project task with a 5 day duration that starts on 4/4 and assigned Jane as a resource at 100%. When I level the resources, it assings Jane to work 3 hrs each day on the help desk task and starting 4/4, 5 hrs each day for 8 days to work on the project task. So far, this is what I want. But when I look at the Gantt chart view, it shows the help desk task as one continuous bar and the projet task is shown as 8 small bars (one per day) with ...s between each bar. Eventhough it is scheduling Jane to work on the project task 5 hrs per day for 8 consecutive days, in the gantt chart is showing a split after each day.
I tried going into Tools > Options and turning off "split in-progrss tasks" - this made no change. I also tried turning off "leveling can create splits in remaining work" - this moved the project task out after the end of the help desk task. I have also tried changing the priorities of each task and could not achieve the desired result.
Is there any way that I can get the software to not "split" the project task and show both the help desk and project tasks a continuous bars on the gantt view?
Thanks!
