Hi folks,

A friend of mine just got internet, but she is worried for her children. She would like that her children can not access porno sites (of course), but they are by times hidden in other sites. I have myself had a time when I looked up 'Men in Black' the movie and the first site which came up on the search was a porno site. So her children can come on such sites as well and she was to prevent this.

Is there any way how this can be prevented, for example with a program or such? Or is there a program which allows the children to only access certain sites, which you put in the program in advance? And if such a program exists, and you put in eg. Wikipedia, can they still perform searches over the whole of wikipedia without being blocked?

Thanks in advance,
Blacky!

Can you share the name of the program with me please? Would be interested to know..

Thanx

Kes:)

There's no 100% solution, as the most innocent query can return inappropriate results. But you can try programs like NetNanny and Cybersitter to reduce the chances.

Also if you have a broadband router/FW there is usually an option to block sites. The solution that Chiph suggested is good, but many of these will have to update the site listing, much like Anti virus software you need to keep updating it. good luck.

How about software which reads the text content of the page first, and blocks it if certain listed words are found?

I realise this would be no good against images, but in my experience (!), dodgy images are usually accompanied by inappropriate text also.

With a houseful of kids, software of this type would be useful indeed!

My pathetic attempts at learning HTML can be laughed at here:

That's part of what NetNanny, etc. do. They act as browser helper objects, and scan the page for objectional content.

Just remember that these programs err on the side of excessive caution, so they'll be blocked from some sites which are perfectly acceptable (you'll need to provide a password to view them).
