How do you get this effect?

look at the "vital communications" logo, see how the circle overlaps the V and how they cut the colors apart? well hwo do i do that? i can just cut it out wiht the scissors tool but when i get to a closed letter like D or O then i cant cut the inside part out.

It done with the Pathfinder. All that was done was the V was converted to a outline and placed over the oval. Both objects were selected and, with Pathfinder, Exclude overlap was chosen.

THe problem your having with the text is you need to convert it to outlines, ctrl+shift+O or cmd+shift+O if your mac. Then you will have to relase the compound path, I thilk its ctrl+shift+8. Its under one the edit menu I think, or the one right beside it. Now the paths will become the same color, but you can then edit each path seperatly then reselect both and convert back to a compound path.
