So, Lent is upon us.

I have decided to give up all my new years' resolutions for lent.

Lent started a day early for me. Yesterday, we had the day off (it was Mardi Gras, and everything in this part of Louisiana shuts down).

I filed my income tax returns. At least, I'm getting Federal and State refunds, both.

Today (Ash Wednesday) is a day of fasting and abstinence from meat for Catholics. I'm limiting myself to one 7-Layer Burrito from the Taco Bell a couple of blocks from the office.

At college many years ago I was quite friendly with the college chaplain, Terry.

A couple of weeks before the Easter break I was really short of funds and asked Terry if I could borrow a fiver (five pounds to you yanquis.)

He said he would love to help me but "...it's already Lent."

It is time for pacifists to stand up and fight for their beliefs.
