I am looking for a voice mail system for the new processor R. 7 v. 12 i purchased.

The voice mail search for legend says i have a choice of 2,4,6,8,12 ports. What is the difference and how many do I need for a client who has a small business.

4 incoming lines and 8 extensions currently.

Thanks

You can get by with a 4-port voice mail. The least expensive would be a Merlin Mail standalone unit - just make sure it is Release 3.05 - so it is y2k compliant. You could also step up to Merlin Legend Mail 007 which plugs directly into an empty Legend cabinet slot. The newer voice mail systems would be Merlin (Magix) Messaging modules which will fit in a Legend slot with a special enclosure. The newer Messaging modules can go up to 12 ports (meaning 12 simultaneous voice mail related transactions). The non-Magix Messaging modules (Merlin Mail R3, Legend Mail 007) max out at 6-ports.

2 would work fine as long as you don't use the auto attendant to answer all the time but 4 would be better.

Look at the Merlin Mesaging 2.5 and higher

All of the above mentioned voicemail systems offer pretty much the same basic voice mail services - but differ in overall storage capacity, number of available autoattendants, integration with the system, a few extra bells & whistles, etc. But, for a small business, most are unncessary and, if cost is a consideration, the Merlin Mail standalone will more than suffice. Just remember that this standalone voice mail needs 4 available ports on an 012 or 016 T/R module with Ring Generator available. The Legend Mail and Magix Messaging do not - but require an open slot in the Legend carrier. The Magix Messaging requires a special Legend clamshell to mount in.

Thanks for the knowledge.

As I am still running with some ATL modules, i will look for a 4 port system.

Thanks

The ATL modules are fine as long as your processor is running Legend software - which it is. Do you have an 012 or 016 T/R with Ring Gen module? If so, you can use a Merlin Mail R3. If not, you need a Merlin Legend Mail 007 or any of the Magix Messaging modules. You should upgrade the processor software to R7, V14.2 - if you have it available. That was the last Legend software release.

If you take a lot of calls from customers, or from non-customers, go with 4 or more ports. That will cover you and a little head room. Nothing worse than putting money in to trade up at less than the price you paid to begin with. Justifying extra ports, even when not using an AA for customers is very cost effective. Have a back door number so your non-customer calls go to an AA to direct themselves to their destination, rather than to your receptionsist.

You do not always get what you pay for, but you never get what you do not pay for.

Tom,

I am waiting for UPS to deliver the new R7 v12 processor I found on ebay. where would i find the update to the processor software to come up to v14.2?

Rick

Sometimes you see them on eBay - but not often. Otherwise, a friendly telephone pro/installer. The V12 is probably just fine - it is not that much older a release than the R14.2
