I have been asked to upgrade a Merlin Legend System to Magix and add Voicemail. My Merlin experience is limited to about 6 years of occasional maintenance, troubleshooting and AMC. I am not really uncomfortable doing the job, however, I thought I'd better run this past the experts in order to insure that I don't overlook something. Here's the plan:

Current system has 2 carriers consisting of Legend R6.0 (v11), (3)408 cards, (2) analog 016 cards, (1) 008 OPT card.

New System to upgrade to Magix R4.0 (with clam shell) and add Merlin Messaging R3.0. Also requested to replace both power supplies.

First, is there any change needed in the Power Supplies?

Also, is there a specific order in which things need to be done? I plan to backup the existing system using WINSPM 9.0, then power down and unseat all the cards, replace and seat the processor, connect to the ADMIN port and restore to the backed up config, reseat the other cards and add the MM card, configure VM.

Is there anything that I am forgetting? OR does anyone have any warnings or techniques that I shoud be aware of?

I appreciate your input.

The latest Legend power supplies will support the messaging. I could be wrong, but I am not sure 008 OPT module is supported on a Magix. Someone else can confirm that. I assume you mean 408 MLX cards as 408 cards are not supported on Magix systems.

You cannot simply backup and restore between releases either. You need to backup the configuration onto your PC with WinSPM, convert the file to Magix R4.0, and then restore that file onto the Magix processor.

My thought would be to replace the Legend carriers with Magix carriers. By doing that, you can do away with the clamshells and get power supplies that can support the greatest load.

I would also jump right to the Avaya Merlin Messaging R4 voicemail as opposed to the R3.

But...as they say in car commercials...Your Milage May Vary. [bigsmile]

As Telecomboy noted, 408 modules...assuming that they are supporting ATL (Merlin Classic) sets cannot be carried over to the Magix. The Magix supports the following phones: T/R, ETR (Partner phones), MLX and 4400 series.

Thank you for your input. I will check on the 408's, as I have not yet seen the system. Also, is it fairly easy to "convert" the backup file to Magix 4.0?

Yes. It is in Winspm, you will see it on the screen of Winspm. You press the convert button, it asks you which file you want to convert (Legend backup), then which release to convert it to (Magix R4), and finally where to save that new file (name it what you like). You can then restore that new Magix R4 file to the Magix R4 processor. Note that a restore from PC takes longer than a restore from the pcmcia card. I think it takes 20 minutes or so.
