Have a client that uses WINSPM for programming his R7 processor, but wants to get reports from his SMDR port. Has 355AF and straight thru cable working fine with WINSPM to the switch. Told him to use Hyperterminal or equal COM program ... set to 1200 -8 -N -1 and be sure his hardware COM port matches those settings and data should be there.

He is using Procomm Plus 4.7, has set print options to the SMDR port and not the PC port, now reporting that he can't get any data from his SMDR port???

Any ideas ..... we seldom see a processor with a bad SMDR port but I guess that could be the problem?

Also, In Maintenance, the RS232 Ports can be RESET, as well as the MODEM port.

I would try that before I replaced the Processor.

The Installation manual is QUITE CLEAR on all the extra stuff you have to put on to have the SMDR and/or ADMIN ports more than 50 feet away from the Control Unit.

With out this stuff, the ports can get zapped.

I suspect setup with Procomm Plus is problem. I use an old DOS version of Procomm which works great but had many problems trying to use the Windows version. After finally getting it to run under Windows, experienced data loss. Cure was to run MSDOS and old Procomm DOS version. N, 1200, 8, 1 parameters works. Remaining problem is that Procomm will not allow periodic file saving and if there is a power glitch you lose access to the data. This can be bad if you collect the data unattended for days/weeks at a time. A UPS is strongly recommended for the PC in this case. Another plus for DOS is that an old 286/386 machine is adequate. Years ago, on other systems, I used a progam call "Mite." You setup the disk filename and program would periodically append data to the file, forever. Risk of data loss due to power outage was only a few entries. Wish I still had the program.

I also know of some utilities that do serial port capture and automatically create new files each night (if all you want to do is log the SMDR). Let me know and I'll see if I can find the web references to them.

My SMDR is set to 1200 7E1 on my Legend R7 v9. We use a Pollcat to collect the CDR.
