Legend R7 confused by caller ID with only a number

I've got a Merlin Legend (CKE3, hardware vintage 00, R7.0, v10.0) system with a pair of 408 MLX GS/LS-ID modules (hardware vintage 12, firmware vintage 42, application vintage 31, upgradeable). We have caller ID (with calling party name) service from our local telco.

For calls with both name and number, the system works like a charm.

However, for calls with a number but without a name (name is "Out of Area", e.g. for wireless callers), the system claims there's no caller ID data. (I verified this by plugging in a caller ID phone directly into one of our trunks. I see "Out of Area / 617-792-3222".)

Is this a fundamental limitation of these caller ID modules? Is it fixable by a firmware upgrade? A processor upgrade?

On a related note, is there any way to get MLX phones to display both name and number simultaneously, without having to sacrifice one of the programmable buttons?

As a minor follow-up, here's a little more information:

I have turned on the LS-ID delay for the trunks, so they are generally correctly receiving caller ID data.

Also, the system reports "No Caller ID" for "Private" calls.
It's incredibly irritating that this thing doesn't distinguish between Out of Area, Private, and Number (with no name). These are extremely valuable bits of information.

Sorry to keep following up my own message, but I managed to figure out a bit more (with more caller ID data flowing in).

Disclosed name and number: both show up correctly

Out of area name, disclosed number: name shows up as Out of Area, number is discarded, showing "No Caller ID" instead

Out of area name, out of area number: name shows up as Out of Area, number shows "No Caller ID", rather than Out of Area.

Private name, private number: name shows up as Private, number shows "No Caller ID", rather than Private.

In short, the system is interpreting WAY too much as "No Caller ID". It discards the number even when it's present (by far the worst offense), and it forces me to refer to the name to determine whether there's not a number because it's out of area, private, or the CO simply didn't send any data.
Is there a configuration issue I can tweak to fix this? Is there a firmware or processor upgrade that fixes this?

I have the same problem with a Merlin Magix R3.0, Merlin Legend R7.0 V9, R7.0 V12. Anybody have a solution?

More crappy software from AVAYA! One would think that a company that came from the Bell System/Western Electric/Lucent could do a better job at this! Especially since they invented the CLASS features. They seem to be the last "TO GET IT"!

I think Avaya has bugs in their software. You probably need to contact them and open some sort of bug report. I would lean on them to fix their crappy software and provide patches or updates.

The more I learn about the Legend, etc the more I like the other systems I have worked on and installed over the years, Siemens, Northern Telecom, Panasonic, and Toshiba to name a few. And I thought Northern Telecom had wierd ideas and logic!

Don't give up, but be persistent with them.

I haven't see a business phone system yet that will handle caller ID as well as someone's home display phone. If you look, caller ID for businesses is just not a common feature, so it is not given much attention. As we all know, every system has it's own quirks. I would take the Legend over just about anything except maybe Northern in certain cases. You have to admit it is one of the most stable and reliable platforms on the market. I too wish it were just a bit more flexible in some areas.

Try changing your display info to number only (no name). You will likely receive all calling number info (when sent)but have to sacrifice the name info to display it. The number should be more important than the name when using caller ID. This system, while it has its quirks, is not necessarily designed to be a world-class routing switch. If you want that, buy a Definity. AT&T/Lucent/Avaya like to call this marketing.

LEGEND R7 V14.2 OR V33.0 AND
MAGIX R1.5 V95.2

ABOVE PATCH WILL FIX YOUR PROBLEMS.

I've got a Magix 3.0 v4 and I get OUT OF AREA, PRIVATE, and so on. Maybe its a function of the phone company. In fact, I would bet it. Because OUT OF AREA is not something the phone system would know. How does it know what city you live in? It doesn't. Nor does it care. It simply displays exactly whats being provided by the telco.

Now, in the case where its saying no caller id provided when only 1 part of the data exists, that is a bug and is fixable, but again I don't have that issue on Magix 3.0 so it must have been fixed prior to that.
