I have a merlin legend R7.0 V9.0 that now has an alarm light on the processor (CKE4 processor module). The error code is 780E. This is described as LOWER ROM FAILURE; Memory failed ROM test; turns on processor LED. If problem persists, replace processor.

Although the error light is on, my system is running GREAT! Does anyone know if the rom is in a socket and could be replaced by me, or do I need to ship my processor somewhere for repair/exchange?

Additionally, If I exchange my processor, can I simply make sure that the backup is current on the memory card plugged into the current processor, then install it in the replacement processor prior to starting the system? Will all system programming install from the card at startup or by doing a restore at the programming console?

Your reply is greatly appreciated!

Very Interesting....

In the OLD DAYS (Legend R1 & R2) that error would have meant that the SOCKETED CHIPS in the REMOVABLE PLATE (on the side of the PROCESSOR) were LOOSE. (We fixed many by just PRESSING THEM IN WITH MUCH GUSTO !)

However, with the CKE4 design, all of the MEMORY CHIPS (and every thing else) were soldered in.

I would first "DROP" all of the PERMINENT and TRANSIENT errors and see if they ever came back.

They PROBABLY will not. This could have been due to a power surge/drop and/or whatever.

If it continues, I would consider, but not very strongly, a processor change.

And, yes, if you back up to the FLASH card, and replace with a LIKE FOR LIKE processor, it would just be a matter of RESTORE the translations to the new PROCESSOR, but don't forget to set the DATE AND TIME.

If this were my system, I'd probably just clear the errors and watch it for a while.....

Thanks so much for the information. After clearing the errors in the system (thus turning off the alaram light), the error returns in 8 minutes; it shows up in the error log every 8 minutes thereafter. So, I guess I'll have to work a repair/trade for my processor. Again, Thank you

Actually may be a good opportunity to upgrade to a higher release of software on the processor. If you have WinSPM, there is an upgrade utility within it that allows you to convert your backed up software to the release level that the WinSPM will support. I believe that WinSPM is up R8 which supports R3 Magix upgrades. The trick is to backup to your hard drive and then convert the file, then restore the converted file.

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize that I could put a Magix processor in my Legend system. Can I still use my existing 408 GS/LS-ID modules and sets (MLX-20L, MLX-10D, etc..) and my existing modules such as 008ATL (for my transtalk phones) and my 012T/R for my merlin mail system? I appreciate your comments and feedback.

Re magix upgrade, sounds like everything EXCEPT for the ATL circuit pack is compatible. While ATL's don't work with magix, you should be able to reconfigure and connect your transtalk through a ETR012 or ETR016 card which allows you to interface any Partner phones. Your transtalk should be compatible in this manner.
