I have a Merlin Legend r6.1 v11.1 system that I am planning to upgrade to r7.0 v14.2. I have read that this is a "software-only" upgrade.

Have any of you performed an upgrade of similar revision levels for Legend? Just wondering if this is indeed the case, and there are no hardware concerns (e.g. - BIS phones, plastic carriers, etc.). I know upgrading Legend r6.1 v11.1 to Magix 2.x would entail getting rid of the BIS phones, plastic carriers, etc.

Any tips at all would be greatly appreciated.

gregarican,

With the upgrade to the 7 all of the hardware will be compatible but keep in mind in order to use the 016 MLX cards in the systen, the processor you will need a cke4 or a cke 5 processor.

just follow the directions. You need to do a back up to disk then "convert" it from a 6.1 backup to a 7 backup the restore from the new backup after you do the forced upgrade.

Just as an FYI the Magix does work with plastic carriers with the exception of the 100R module that has to be in a Metal carrier. You can connect a Metal carrier to a plastic one and program in "bridge boards" for the blank spaces and then you put the 100R in the Metal carrier. It does look funny though. But you are right the ATL cards and the 400 line card will not work with the magix.

Doesn't sound too bad. Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Thanks for all of the info!

Greg,

The latest Legend release R7 - V14.2 is only a software flash upgrade and takes about 3 minutes to perform. Don was right in the hardware limitations he listed for you. TTECH is pretty smart! :)

The ideal way to do it is through the Legend WINSPM software from your PC - (you can set WINSPM to "standard" and it looks like your MLX 20L programming buttons/screen if that is how you have done your programming previously). This allows your to save your R6.1 programming to your PC's hard drive and then select the upgrade function to R7. After that function is completed and check your release to see if the upgrade was successful through the "Inventory" function ... you can convert/restore your R6.1 programming translations back to the new R7 system and all should be fine. Do you have the upgrade to R7 and WINSPM V6 already?

What about upgrading from R5.0 to R7.0? Anything to be on the lookout there? We're going to need software and hardware correct?

Thicks70,

Depends on what you want to do with your system. Read Don - TTech's post above for a good explanation of the hardware issues for the 016MLX & CKE3 limitations and also I believe you will need the CKE4 or CKE5 for the 016ETR.

All of the R5 legends were of the CKE3 Era. The CKE4 came out around the time of the R6 R6.1 time frame. I have never tried the 016 ETR on anything but a R7 but I have A feeling that it would not work because In the Extentions Section where you program weather they are provisioned as ETR or TR ports shows up on the R7.

Also you may see some fixes if you do uprgade to the 7 even if you can,t use the 016 boards it is usually a good Idea.

BUT.........

I have read that there are a few boards that may give you trouble on a R7 They are the 517A1 and 517B1 408 LS ATL boards and the 517A3 008 LS boards Avaya says to use the 517C1 or higher for the 408s or the 517B3 for the 008s. They also say do not use a 517A26 408 GS/LS boards in a legend R7.

Also if you have PRI trunks I recommend The R7V14.2 I had some freaky problems with the R7V10 with the PRI as the first trunk card in the system.

I also have a list of 17 known issues of the legends Prior to the R6 V11.2

If you want to I can type them all out but's it's a little Hectic here because I am getting Married on saturday.

Thanks for the compliment. you too are one of the Best!!

Don

Don,

Congratulations .....

The list would be helpful or a link to that info if it is on a Avaya site bulletin or webpage.

You can upgrade any CKE3 processor to R7 and even to Magix R1.0 and R1.5. Not highly recommended for a large system as one of the main differences between CKE3 -4 - 5 is the onboard memory. CKE3 upgraded to R7+ will not run the 016MLX or the 016ETR mods and some early releases of cards.

TTech, by any chance could you tell me that list of 17 known Legend R6 issues? I know you're probably busy and all, but if you get a chance.

Thanks and congrats!

Here they are at least 17 fixes for releases prior to R6V11.2 I dug it out of my Archives But the credit goes to Doug at DL

1. SMDR SMDR report on ISDN faciliteis indicated "far end Disc" when the legend iniated the disconnect.

2. protocol errors and random lines go inactive, working off a siemens switch from South West Bell, with mulitple hunt groups.

3. Dropped calls or Voice mail picks up in the middle of a call.

4. In SPM, when entering system renumber, extention status LED's go out on the DSS with the system in Hotel mode.

5. ISDN PRI channel ID field shows 0 for some channels

6. After making a station a fax extention, The going into MSG waiting and doing an inspect in SPM is shows Slot 17 Port 8 to be the reciever weather programmed or not.

7. Stuck trunks using DID, VMI & RCF.

8. Occasionally a false rotary 1 is generated my the SLS

9. Authorization code across PRI is not working, however across loop start lines it is OK.

10. CSU loopback test and demand test running too long.

11. Restricted phones using marked speed dial codes fail and goto reorder tone

12. CTX forwarding is occuring for non-owned DFT

13. System allows you to renumber an adjunct when that range is already in use as a UDP extention.

14. System access voice buttons function as if they were system access ring. No voice calls can be made from the set.

15. Mode codes not being delivered to the VMS product in key mode

16. ISDN PRI legend shift to code set 6

17. Merlin ATL consoles intermittently fail when transferring calls.

there they are. I dont understand quite a few of them.

Another good source is the legend R6.1 pocket reference. It shows the revision of the boards and why they revised Them, But they stopped showing the revisions in the R7 pocket reference and it is not in any of the Magix pocket references.

All: Thanks for all of the info. Here's the list of boards currently installed in the system we plan to upgrade:

Slot # 1: 408 GS/LS-MLX
A Slot # 2: 408 GS/LS-MLX
A Slot # 3: 016 TRR Ringing Frequency 20 Mhz
A Slot # 4: 800 DID
A Slot # 5: 012
A Slot # 6: 008 OPT
A Slot # 7: 100D

So I'm guessing that the problems would be with the 016 TRR board, correct? Also, will the version mentioned, R7V14.2 come with the new processor or will I need to order it along with the new processor. Also congrats on your wedding.

Thicks70,

I don't think you will need to change anything in your configuration for the upgrade but I highly recommend you go to the CKE4 w/ R7 V14.2 to eliminate any potential unforeseen problems and for possible future expansion. I also recommend that you use the Legend 391C1 power supply.

Call me and we can discuss this further and any other questions you might have. Andrew Roach
