Problem: SPM allows extension renumbering but very often it will not accept a new extension number.

It seems to accept only some new extension numbers. For example, in the Quick tab, I use Labels/Extensions to list the in-use extension numbers.

What are the rules for which extension numbers are accepted?

Confusing.

Thanks,
MWM

The ONLY rule is that you cannot renumber an extention to an extention number that already exists.

To keep things simple, most installers first renumber the entire system to the default of "setup space" - which numbers all extentions starting at 7100, and all adjuncts starting at 7300. They then renumber the extentions to what the customer wants - say starting at 500. If an extention is not used - they leave the "setup space" ext. number. Whenever they add an extention, the take one of those available, unused setup space extention numbers and renumber it to what they want.

If you need to renumber an extention that already exists - say to a different port in the system - you need to follow a 2-step process. First renumber that (desired) extention number at it's existing port to something else (if you had used setup space - that could be the old setup space ext number). Then, renumber the new port you want to use - to the now available desired extention number.

Actually, there is another consideration, for example, if you have a c.o. line port numbered 6, which is common for the paging trunk, you can not also have an extension 6xx...Are you trying to use the same number of digits and the same first digit? Then the only consideration is not having an existing number in your dial plan. Be aware that DGC groups are also included in your dial plan.
