We have installed the Legato module to backup our Notes server. We are seeing successful backups of r4 file format databases, but our r5 file format databases don't show as being backed up during the incrementals. From speaking with Legato, it is my understanding that only the transaction logs for the databases are backed up during incrementals. My question is, where is the data stored for those databases? If I were to loose a database and needed to recover it, where does the incremental data come from?

We also can't figure out how to do a document level recovery from the notes client. Again, Legato says that has to be done with the client that is installed on the server. However, when we try to list backups from the previous x amount of days, it only lists the full backup as a date to choose. It never shows dates for the incrementals.

Does anyone have a write-up that will help us better understand this whole mess?

Thanks,
-danny

Hi,

you are right, the incrementals only backup the transactionlogs, where all the changes for the database are stored.
Legato backs up the transaction logs in the incremental modus and gives Lotus the information that that transactionlog can be reused.
To do a DB recovery you need a full backup of the DB and the transactionlogs which have stored data of that database. The Notes Recovery Manager applies the transaction logs to the DBs. Therefore you can do a point in time recovery. In the versions view of the NetWorker Notes GUI you will only see the full backups of the DB. You have to change the browsetime to get the DB you want to have, a.e. 10/11/02 8:26p.
Forget the document level restore, because only full backups can do that job -> you can only restore documents which databases are backed up in full mode.
That are my experiences with that BMO, we use it for all our 12 Notes server and had no problems at all.

Regards and have a nice day
Stefan
