Can I use a stock photo of clouds in my PhotoShopped composit and still consider the finished product as original? Would I be infringing on copyrights if I wanted to copyright the finished result?

Probably a dumb question, huh?

if you want to use stock photographs in your composite, then you will have to purchase the license for using the image from the supplier, the image still remains the copyright of the owner/photographer.
However, if the image you have is royalty free you can purchase the image and use it freely, as a design element.
Any image that you create can be copyrighted, barring the original, as your own work.

Moe: It could have been a real ugly situation, but luckily I managed to shoot him in the spine.

I wouldn't worry about it if it's for non-busine$$ purposes. ie, education, personal.
