We currently power off the AS/400 over weekends. Our maintenance tech says we are better off leaving it on. What is the general concensus?

you should always reboot the 400 once a week. leaving it off over the weekend seems exsesive but not a bad thing per say

The AS/400 is meant for 24/7 operation non-stop. I don't know if it hurts it to power down and up all the time, but it also doens't hurt to leave it running all the time. If you want to IPL once a week or every couple weeks to apply PTFs that is fine. We do that. Personally, I would leave it running.

Our AS/400 hasn't been shut down completely since it was installed over a year ago. We have an unattended IPL scheduled every Sunday morning.

I'd say you are better off leaving it running and schedule the weekly IPL (you can apply your PTF's and such beforehand).

There is absolutely no requirement to IPL an AS/400 weekly, monthly, or ever except when needed to apply PTF's. It is estimated that the 64 bit AS/400 has enough temporary addresses to run for approximately 25 years non-stop.

In our shop we IPL monthly, but only so that the operators don't forget how!

looks like I'm greatly outnumbered here. [lol]

I've always been told what I recommend but I'm going to bring it up later tonight when I get to the machine I have the oppurtunity to work on and find out the reasoning behind it. We had a discussion about this a year or so ago and am not ocmpletely sure of the circumstances but will post back those arguments.

although, with the TT list telling otherwise I have a feeling I'll be the one arguing later. [wink]

We keep ours running 24/7. We have a weekly IPL scheduled for early am on Sunday (so that any ptf's that the system downloaded from IBM over the past week get applied). I also do a monthly IPL when I complete doing system maintenance (SAVSYS, cleaning up unused programs/files, RCLDLO, RCLSTG and group PTF's).

We IPL (unattended) on a weekly basis. You will notice a MAJOR difference if you ever have any power problems, as far as how quickly it comes back up. The last place I worked we never did an IPL and had a major power outage (something that lasted beyond our UPS) and it took 2 hours to come back up. Whereas, now at my new place of employement it takes maybe 30 minutes to come back up.
