I want to learn php. What software do I need before I can start (e.g. a compiler) I only have access to "nice" webspace at work (by nice I mean webspace that supports php) and would idealy like to learn offline.

Can I get software off the net? If so, where? Also, does anyone know of some good online tutorials (apart form W3Schools)? (simple, free programs would be prefered)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys...

if you wish to program php offline and test code offline, you need a server on your LAN or on your computer.

I program in textpad/ftp client

An easy way is to go and get phptriad or easyphp. They are full packages with Apache MySQL dbs and PHP ([W|L]AMP ) The W\L] refer to the OS (Windows or Linux). There are also other packages out there as well.

Or you can download each individually and install them yourself.

Once you have the webserver and PHP working, you can start coding.
