I am new to using Cognos Impromptu and Powerplay and in fact have no idea how to use powerplay. There don't seem to be any books or resources to learn Cognos other than the help that comes with Cognos. Simple list reports are relatively easy. But I want to learn more!! Does anyone have any other resources for tutorials or books that teach mid to upper level cognos skills?

This sort of question seems to come up regularly in this forum and the only answers that I know of are: to use the documentation that comes with the software; go on a Cognos training course; get training from a consultancy.
One would think that with Cognos applications being so widely used that someone would have published something. Perhaps someone should edit the responses from this excellent forum.

Practice, Practice, Practice. The documentation should answer most of your basic questions, read all of that first, and the rest of your questions, here you are, you found us!
It makes it easier to learn if you are using it on a daily basis.

I'll suggest u learn the documentaion in the following steps..

1. Discovering Impromtu,
2.step by step impromtu
2.Mastering Impromtu
3.step by step catalogs
4.Impromtu admin guide

Follow the same steps for powerplay and transformer.

To get practical knowledge I think u should start see the samples.
1) see what are the steps followed to reach upto .mdc(PowerPlay Cube)
2) for each step try its samples (in cognos install directory)
