***************Warning ... This is bit Lengthy ............

Hi Gurus,

I am New to AIX. I am basically into SunSolaris & HP-UX and now would like to my hands on AIX as well both on the h/w & s/w perspective.

Though I have gone through the like, I felt you gurus might be able to suggest me better online guidence, so that I can also come upto your level.

Plz help me in the following:-

1. Various supported IBM servers which can run AIX 5L and
6.1 [ like for example HP Integrity Servers, PA-RISC Servers ]

2. Which is the High End model running AIX [eg. in HPUX is SuperdomeServer]

3. h/w architecture of a IBM AIX servers [May be If I can get the block diagrams of the servers ]

4. User & Group management

5. Scheduling Jobs [ is it the same crontab here ]

6. Is there a MP/GSP like we have in HP, If not what is
the equivalent where in we can long and find issues on
the H/w.

7. May be a good link on LVM (to create a VM & a
filesystem)

8. how to inmplement LVM functions like extending, reducing

9. Is Online JFS avaliable here also, If not what is the
equivalent.

10. Mirrioring Commands

11. Managiing Backups

12. Booting Process --> this should have been my first
query

13. Virtulization Concepts [like vpar/npar in HP-UX]

14. Is Virtulization done in a different way for IBM Blades
[like for HP Blades we use IVM and HPVM,HPVGuests
etc..]

15. Various types of Installations [like
ignite,cold installation etc]

16. Cluster implementation[Like HA-SurviceGuard in HP-UX]

If possible plz provide links and your valuable suzessions.

I guess this thread would be useful for many of the newvibes like me to find all the information at one place.

Thanks everyone for the valuable Time in Advance to help me out.

This looked like fun, I work on both.
1. Various supported IBM servers which can run AIX 5L and
6.1
-- any Server running a p4/5/6 cpu and PCI bus, Currently only IBM, Honeywell, and I think Hitachi make these.
2. Which is the High End model running AIX [eg. in HPUX is SuperdomeServer]
-- Any p6. like p550 is like a r8640, and p595 is superdome.
3. h/w architecture of a IBM AIX servers [May be If I can get the block diagrams of the servers ]
-- Look redbook for a JS22, p550 and p595 that should give you the base.
4. User & Group management
-- ldap, Microsoft AD, or smitty users and groups
5. Scheduling Jobs [ is it the same crontab here ]
-- same.
6. Is there a MP/GSP like we have in HP, If not what is
the equivalent where in we can long and find issues on
the H/w.
-- HMC unless Full system then AIX errlog and diags.
7. May be a good link on LVM (to create a VM & a
filesystem)
-- Redbook LVM
8. how to inmplement LVM functions like extending, reducing
-- Redbook
9. Is Online JFS avaliable here also, If not what is the
equivalent.
-- Not required delivered with JFS on all supported AIX versions.
10. Mirrioring Commands
-- Redbook LVM
11. Managiing Backups
-- mksysb - and other Enterprise backup tools
12. Booting Process --> this should have been my first
query
-- Rebooks search for alt_disk
13. Virtulization Concepts [like vpar/npar in HP-UX]
-- npar same as dedicated lpar, not used very much
-- vpar same as Aix 6 wpar ( run a AIX wpar under the main AIX
-- dlpar like npar can be .1 cpu 512MB up to full server resources. supports shared pool cpu, and can add or remove, cpu, memory, or cards while server is running.
-- p6 come with either IVE or virtual network switch
-- IVM or VIOS - used to share resources ( network, disk, and fibre cards ) on dlpars
14. Is Virtulization done in a different way for IBM Blades
[like for HP Blades we use IVM and HPVM,HPVGuests
etc..]
-- SEE JS21 JS22 redbooks for AIX on blades.
15. Various types of Installations [like
ignite,cold installation etc]
-- ignite server same as NIM
-- ignite tape same as mksysb except can boot from.
-- cold install, upgrade install, from cd or dvd
16. Cluster implementation[Like HA-SurviceGuard in HP-UX]
-- HACMP easier to work with, and can add / remove / replace disks and some cards while cluster is active.

I suggest you read up on any of the above and Redbooks will give you a good overview.
