Really a stupid question but I thought I would ask anyway.

We run Active Directory here. Our network Administrator said we don't have an LDAP server yet but I can build you on in about a week or so (after the holiday's). Is Active Directory an LDAP server or are the two beasts completely different?

So Active Directory is the Microsoft version of a directory server - it responds to ldap requests (LDAP being a protocol). AD also serves as the backbone for storing information about the NOS environment in an LDAP accessible way ...

There are some caveats to using AD as an enterprise or application specific directory - which may be why you are getting some push back from your network admin ...

Then what can you get using a programming language like say PHP to get something to use from AD.

Can I also ask a stupid question?

If Windows 2000 uses Active Directory, what does Windows NT use? I am trying to modify an ASP page that connects using the following lines:

Provider=ADsDSOObject
Open=Active Directory Provider
Connect="'LDAP://ServerName'"

The pages work pointing to a Windows 2000 box, but I am testing using a Windows NT box. The error returned is

Load Definitions:(3001)Arguments are of the wrong type, are out of acceptable range, or are in conflict with one another.

Thanks!

Windows NT doesn't come with Active Directory.
