Is it possible to use LDAP from a remote computer(a computer that is not in the domain) to get information from a domain?

We have a number of remote users that connect via the internet to our network. These users perform the following sets -
Log on locally to their machines.
Connect to the internet.
Authenticate with our firewall.
Start Outlook and connect to Exchange 2000.
(They are prompted for their domain username and password)

We have a policy where passwords expire after 30 days. These users do not get any notification before their passwords expire only when their passwords have expired. They then need to contact the SA to get their passwords unlocked/reset so they can log in to change their passwords. As a tempory solution I have got these users to set reminders to change passwords before the 30 days are up.

I have created a script to query AD, using LDAP, which displays the time 'til password expires. This script runs fine when on the domain. But it does not work from the remote computers. Is it possible to use LDAP from remote computers or computers that are not in the domain?
