i am newbie in linux, i had some question;
- there relation between LDAP dan DNS (can we run LDAP and DNS server in same machine,please explain detail, i am still confused about LDAP and DNS)
- can LDAP get data like user that we make from server (LDAP install on server) so all workstation can logon to server based on user that we make in server throught the LDAP connection.
Thansk,maybe my question look so stupid,i am just newbie that try hard to learn linux

DNS is an application specific repository of data, highly tuned for name resolution. DNS and directory services are very similar in nature - but normal resolution for DNS runs over UDP whereas directory services use LDAP protocol to submit queries and are tuned for different purposes. Therefore it is completely acceptable to run DNS and directory services on the same machine. You would simply configure them as two different services not dependant on each other.

Your second question is a little confusing. I am assuming you are talking about authenticating Linux users via LDAP when they login to a workstation? If so - you simply transform your existing /etc/passwd users into ldap entries, then point your Linux workstation to the directory server. Obviously there are a lot more steps - but that is the fundamental idea.

Does this help at all?

Chris, sorry can't u explain more detail, i still confused.
I tell u using a scenario, from this scenario maybe u will understand my problem.
Now i am using W2K server (using domain and Active Directory) with some client to connect to it, in W2K server we just make Domain Control that control all user. I try to migrate to Linux (because it free), but i am still confused how to configure linux server like W2K Server(that using Domain and Active Directory to control user so user can logon from any workstation). I think if i make domain in Linux can solve this problem. I read in linux article that i must used LDAP to solve my problem (this make me headache). I had learned how to make domain in linux (success) and i try to make LDAP server (never success, ldap_bind server not found). I read many Linux article but still make me confused using the right server to solve my problem, maybe chris can help me to solve my problem....Thanks
