LCS 2005 expired certificate issue

I recently renewed the cert on the exchange server where LCS is also installed. I thought it would cover both OWA and LCS but the old cert expired today and LCS stopped working. I tried restarting the service but it wouldn't start with event ID 12299 and a code indicating cert problems. From searches I've found out how to change the cert but you can't seem to do it with the service down. It seems nodes in the LCS console won't bring up their properties pages without the service started.

Any idea how to tackle this?
