Hi all,
I want to know, in what ways the LCD Monitor is benefitial than CRT Monitors?

Which is really benefitial in all aspects ?

Thanx a lot

Pro's:
They look good
Take up a smaller space
Use less power
Generally better on the eyes

Con's
A lot more expensive
Colour reproduction is not as accurate as a CRT
Even though they have improved, the response times are not as good as a CRT so are generally not as good for gaming.
You can get dead pixels from new, especially noticable on a black screen and considered normal (not a warranty issue unless there are many)

And because they (LCD) use less power, they don't give out nearly so much heat as a CRT monitor.

ROGER.

There are also negligible EM radiations emitted from LCD displays. If you are pregneant a considerations!

Edge geometric distortion is almost eliminated.

On the down side: they are much easier to steal: even I can pick up a 23" tft and carry away under my arm!

If you are furnishing an office, you can get 20% more staff in the same space if using 15" TFTs versus 17" CRT monitors.

All of the above has pretty much nailed the general comparisons. I would just add that text sharpness is another important difference. Although LCD's are constantly getting better, many reviews will still list CRT's at the top for overall text quality (and that's something even a non-gamer should consider). At the very least, check out the monitor before you buy!
[wink]

I believe the dot-pitch on CRT's still has the edge.

True!
You still can't beat a flat screen CRT for picture quality, colour rendition and the best gaming response.
Sony trinitron, Mitsubishi diamontron flat screen.

Also, if you are used to running at a particular resolution, keep in mind that a LCD looks best at it's native resolution.

Forcing it to display any other resolution compromises image quality, and the best native resolution I've seen to date has been 1280x1024...
I'm still waiting for a native resolution of 1600x1200 myself.

That sounds like a 17inch TFT and of course 19's and above are higher native than 1280x1024.

Hmmmm... I can't find a single 19" Viewsonic or NEC/Mitubishi that will do that resolution natively. But I do see the more expensive 20.1's and up have the resolution I want finally. (amazing what a few months of not paying attention to the market does)

Now my problem is coming up with another $1700+ to replace my dual head 21" viewsonic CRT setup...
I may just see my desk again someday!

I use a Sony 19" Flat Trintron at home @ 1600 x 1200 and a 18" Dell TFT @ 1152 x 864 at work. Despite the space issue, the Sony is far nicer to work on, text is better, gameplay great (ok, so I've never managed to compare with the work one ;-) )

Only downer with the CRT are the 2 horizontal wires on the display but you see 'thru' them after a short time and have to look very carefully to pick them out again.

Unless you are pushed for space or one of your monitors is broken, stick with the CRTs for a while longer. TFT prices continue to fall. There may be a blip at Christmas, but the price will continue to fall next year too.

TFTs are also getting faster too.

OH, one extra benefit of my CRT at home, during the winter I can survive with 2 less radiators on in the room where my PC is.

I won't comment on the summer (but this is the UK so it's not as bad as it could be ;-) )

CreamCake,

I just took delivery of a LaCie photon20Vision II. Like you I wanted 1600,1200 resolution, in my case for programing. In the words of Fred Flintstone, It's Grrrrrreat!. It also has a DVI Digital input which gives a much better picture than the standard video. Not cheap, but worh every penny.
