We have a new LCD monitor, when first turned on it goes off and back on every 5 seconds or so. That continues for a few minutes, then works normally for a few hours, but the problem starts again if the computer isn't used for a half hour. We're wondering if problem is with the monitor, which is new. OR with the computer, that is slightly older, running Windows 2000.

Not sure why it goe off and one when turned on but I have a guess why it is turning off after 30 minutes of not using. Check the power options properties is the control panel.

Is your LCD monitor driven from the analog HD-15 connector? If yes then there is a circuit that tries to lock on the analog signal, and then converts it to digital for the display.
My feeling is that it is driven at horizontal or vertical frequencies that are too close to its limits. It may explain the lock circuit losign its grip and regaining it. (Something similar can also happen with a DVI interface.)

Is there anything like the vertical refresh that you can control from your control panel. If yes, try setting it at a different frequency.

Much appreciate your suggestions.
We found the setting in video properties> advanced, for refresh rate. It was set at at 75Hz. We set it to 70Hz (the other choice was 60). Then to be safe went to power options and dissabled monitor shutting off in 20'. That has solved the problem so far. Then we noticed there is a "calibrate" button on the monitor that we didn't see before. But we're glad the problem is solved.
