I have a laptop with a 17" LCD monitor that is starting to "darken" in one region.

The left 1/3 of the display is slightly darker than the rest of the screen, this is more noticeable if you are on plain white screens etc.

My question is: Can this be fixed or am I looking at purchasing a replacement LCD? The laptop is out of warranty.

The screen remains as described above in all modes and at all times.

thanks,
Brett

It sounds as though the backlighting is going out. As far as I have seen it is fixable. However, replacing the backlighting on most lcd screens is not and easy thing to do as the ccfd is usually tightly integrated into the panel.

In most cases if you were to take it into a service center they would just replace the whole lcd. If you look on ebay there are often many screens available and the screen replacement isn't usually very hard to do.

Thanks guys, I have looked around at replacing the part and it seems possible so long as I can find my soldering iron. $14.99 for the part + shipping seems worth it to me.

The worse thing that could happen is I screw up and end up having to buy a full LCD.
