I am new to FileMaker. Is there a way to hide or password protect layout mode so the customer can't change anything?

File -> Manage -> accounts & Privileges

Create a "User" account and specify which layouts and menus are available and which are not.

Thanks for the information. Just one other thing.
I have just created a new account which doesn't allow access to Layout Mode, but when I exit and re-enter FileMaker, it doesn't ask me which account I want to login with. I just enter FileMaker as the admin, so I can't test the new account.
Can you tell me how to make FileMaker as for the new login.
Thanks in advance for your help.

File -> Manage -> Accounts & Privileges

Select the chosen account, select "edit" button at the bottom of the box, set password.
