...in cS 2 linked layers are now indicated by an icon on thr right hand side of the layer, they have changed it...

You can link two or more layers or groups. Unlike multiple layers selected at the same time, linked layers retain their relationship until you unlink them. You can move, apply transformations, and create clipping masks from linked layers.

Select the layers or groups in the Layers palette.
Do one of the following:

Click the link icon at the bottom of the Layers palette (Photoshop) or next to the layer (ImageReady).
(ImageReady) Choose Link Layers from the Layers palette menu.
To unlink layers do one of the following:
Select a linked layer and click the link icon.
(Photoshop) To temporarily disable the linked layer, Shift-click the Link icon for the linked layer. A red X appears. Shift-click the link icon to enable the link again.
Select the linked layers and click the Link icon. To select all linked layers, select one of the layers and then choose Layer > Select Linked Layers.

Layer linking and multiple layer selection Working with multiple layers is easier now because you can select multiple layers in the Layers palette or in the document window using the Move tool.

The layer linking column was removed. To link layers, select multiple layers and click the link icon at the bottom of the Layers palette.

Some menu commands that work on linked layers have been changed to work on multiple layers.

To add or subtract layers from a selection in the Layers palette, Shift-click (or drag) in the document with the Move tool, with the Auto Select Layer option selected.

Previously, Shift-clicking linked and unlinked layers.
