Hi, im trying to layer a small jpg pic of a baby onto a solid white gif image. The problems is it doesnt work, the baby just turns into a sort of solid clump, similat to negative image. Is it possible to do this or is there aother way round the problem?

thanks
Nick

You should first right-click on the image & select: "Image/RGB" mode. Since GIF images are at indexed mode and need to be transformed in order to work with GIMP.
Later, at saving, you can save it as GIF but you should explain that you are not creating a dynamic GIF, just a flat one.
You should play a little with the Image menu option, since there is no danger to spend a day trying options and later undoing all by pressing Ctrl-Z or reloading a previous image saved before trying new options...
What needs to be known is that GIFs economize colours that is the opposite of JPEG images. So it is better to work as if you where only managing JPG images, and finally transform them to GIF to save them. :)
